Museum Education Internship Program

Old Idaho Penitentiary Internship Program

Public Archives and Research Library Internship Program

An internship with the Library and Archives is designed to give students the opportunity to work with professionals in the field of history. Specific benefits include the chance to explore a possible career path, complement academic studies with hands-on experience, add professional experience to a resume, interact with colleagues experienced in the profession, and gain experience dealing with and solving problems in a team environment. The Library and Archives offers internships in 3 areas each semester:
  • Oral History – design a project; conduct background research; interview narrators; index, transcribe, and audit interviews.
  • State Archives – rebox/refolder; arrange and describe; prepare inventory and other finding aids; and data entry for a variety of state and local government records.
  • "Revolving" – spend 3-4 weeks each in several areas of the Library and Archives, including reference, photographs, manuscripts, state archives, and oral history.

Internships are gained through a competitive process, beginning with recommendation from the student' s faculty advisor. Students should be prepared to meet with the Library and Archives administrator and project supervisors to determine which internship best suits the needs of both the student and the Library and Archives. Students also submit an application which must be approved by the faculty advisor, Library and Archives administrator, and executive director or the Idaho State Historical Society. Once approved, students should be prepared to complete the following activities, in addition to their work assignment:

  • Prepare a short (2-3 page) research design for their proposed activity.
  • Submit a short (3-5 page) evaluation of the work at the end of the semester.
  • Complete a series of assigned readings on various library and archives topics.

Unless otherwise negotiated, all students complete a 3 credit (150 hour) commitment and will be graded on a pass/fail basis.

As part of our program, The Idaho History Museum publishers a short online magazine for teachers and students on topics pertinent to their studies. Each issue features short articles, games, activities, and teacher lesson plans. A Prospector Club intern would help put together this eight month magazine, researching and writing articles, assisting in layout and design, and creating lesson plans appropriate for a 4th grade classroom.

Museum Education Intern

Each year the Idaho History Museum hosts hundreds of hands-on history programs for the school children of Idaho. From cowboy roping techniques to wool spinning to panning for gold, the education program strives to make history fun by incorporating dynamic activities into their lessons. An education intern has the chance to sharpen their classroom teaching skills without the pressure of a traditional school setting. Interns will help set-up and teach the programs and have the opportunity to develop new presentations for the museum. An excellent opportunity for future elementary teachers, history majors, or anyone interested in a career in museum education.
