Idaho Soil Conservation Districts

During the early 1930s, the Soil Conservation Service was created as a response to the droughts of the 1920s that led to soil erosion and the Dust Bowl. The Soil Conservation Service in Idaho began in the late 1930s and was responsible for many conservation projects that altered Idaho's agricultural landscape. These projects were documented and photographed by SCS workers, and we have the records in a photographic collection. We also have public records from the Idaho Soil Conservation Commission and several manuscript collections and interviews related to soil conservation in Idaho.

  • P1995.6 is our collection of USDA Soil Conservation District photographs. This collection is extensive and well-documented, containing thousands of photographs of Soil Conservation Districts throughout Idaho from the 1940s through the 1970s. Most of the photos and negatives are paired with the original documentation by the photographer or other SCS employee, detailing the exact location where the photo was taken.
